More than anything it’s just a wonderful puzzle game. But it’s a mediated dream, I guess – a lab dream. At first I worried, like I mentioned, that it wasn’t particularly dreamlike – that Hawthorne was right and the subject was just too tough. Used to shrinking doors to pass through? What if clicking on the door creates a copy instead of picking it up? Your job is to navigate increasingly fraught environments looking for the exit.Īt first I worried this was going to be one of those games that follows the comical bureaucratic blandspeak template of Portal, but it’s a lot more interesting and heartfelt than that. Playing Superliminal is like navigating rapids of constant innovation, and nothing can be taken for granted - at any moment one mechanic can stop working and be suddenly replaced by something entirely new and unexpected. One moment the player will be towering over a model, the next they’ll be sliding through a keyhole to climb into it. There are monochrome worlds where pits and platforms can be almost anywhere, pitch-black rooms that force the player to navigate using shadows, and portals that cause extreme size changes. Factory TownĮach new level of the dream introduces ever-more-bizarre variations on the theme. That’s just the start of Superliminal’s tricks, however. In the two hours I spent with Superliminal, this effect never stopped baffling and amazing me. Conversely, if the player grabs the moon out of the sky and holds it up to a wall just a foot away from their face, it will be the size of a dime when they let it go. For example, if the player picks up a normal can of soda and holds it up and close to the camera so that it blocks the view of a hallway, when they release it, it’s suddenly a giant soda can that is physically blocking the hall. When they let it go, it becomes a 3D object again, but its size is determined by where the 2D object was hovering when it was released. In Superliminal Players start with one mechanicĪny item they pick up in its 3D world immediately transforms into a 2D item. Still, those moments where the game just has you saying “woh” makes it all worth it. By the end of the game I was just relatively tired of it and was hoping for it to end. My issue is just that I don’t think the narrative was interesting enough to make the difficulty sacrifice worth it. To keep the games narrative flowing smoothly, Superliminal’s gameplay ends up being quite”light” with the puzzles being pretty simple but still very satisfying and enjoyable to solve. When, as a patient, you deviate from this experience by accessing parts of the dream space you aren’t supposed to, you incur the ire of a robotic-sounding woman whose manner and voice bear no small resemblance to GlaDOS from “Portal.” the game fully capitalises on it’s amazing concept. “Perspective is everything,” is a phrase that recurs throughout Pierce’s program. Pierce offers his services to people struggling with self-doubt, envy, and other negative emotions rooted in social anxiety. This system is given a light, psychological dimension through the brief musings of Dr. Puzzles are solved by finding the right way to look at things. This remarkably designed puzzle game, which is very much in the spirit of “Portal” and “The Stanley Parable,” uses perspective as a gameplay mechanic. That disorienting feeling is the sensation that “Superliminal” pursues with astounding flair.
